The Building Code of Australia (BCA) set a 5 star energy efficiency standard in 2006. The results of the CSIRO evaluation has recently been released.
The key finding is that compliant houses cost less to run and less to build, which is confirmation of the effectiveness of NatHERS – the Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme.
The CSIRO studied more than 400 houses in Adelaide, Melbourne and Brisbane and compared 3.5 and 4 star houses with the newer 5 star buildings.
